HISTORY & FUTURE

The Oxford Collection by Jeremy Mogford

440 - Old Parsonage Hotel - Oxford - Jeremy Mogford Portrait 5D3_1464 - Web Hero

Jeremy Mogford is a successful restaurateur whose family has been well-known hoteliers for three generations. He has a fine reputation for converting historic buildings, with the foresight to develop beautiful Grade II and Grade II* listed buildings in Oxford into five-star hotels and restaurants.

Throughout the restoration work, followed every step of the way by governmental planners and architectural archaeologists, care has been taken to respect the original features while creating hotels and restaurants that are very much of this century. Old Bank Hotel, Quod Restaurant & Bar, Old Parsonage Hotel, Parsonage Grill & Gees Restaurant & Bar are now appreciated by people all over the world.

Jeremy buys the lease from the Gee family’s Victorian conservatory on Banbury Road and the freehold of the building from Oxford University. Planning permission is granted to change the use from fruiterer and greengrocer to restaurant and bar with the addition of a kitchen, storage and an extended basement.

The Old Parsonage (now also the premises for Parsonage Grill) is acquired. The manor has stood on the present site since 1660 when Edward Selwood, the prosperous chef of nearby St John’s College, completed the original and principal part of the house, which he had begun 20 years earlier.

1998

The Old Bank Hotel opens, alongside Quod Restaurant & Bar. Originally three beautiful buildings, all with tremendous character, they have undergone a certain amount of change over the years. No. 92 was built with four full floors, although the ground floor was remodelled early last century.

The central house, No. 93, was rebuilt in 1798 and a garden created behind. The two central floors are original but it’s possible that the top floor was added in the 1830s. The medieval façade of No. 94 had already been treated to a helping of Victorian pastiche at the turn of the century. At this time, Barclays gave Nos. 92 and 93 the unified façade that everyone sees now.

The flower shop next to Gees Restaurant is transformed to become Gees Gallery, an elegant event space with an evolving collection of young art. Gees Secret Garden is also unveiled, with the invitation to enjoy drinks and dining in an al fresco setting. Both are all-day destinations.

the future…

Exciting new projects are underway… Jeremy is converting a four-story building in the centre of the city into luxury long-stay residences, 36 St Giles… plus a spa is in the making in one of the Old Bank’s historic barns…
